Hello, my name is Monique, and I’m obsessed with making pottery.

Ceramics for me is all about emotion and connection. Clay has helped me get through really difficult times, and I usually look back on each collection and remember what was happening to me at that time. I imagine all my emotion and energy going into the clay, and when it’s fired at extremely high temperatures, all of that is burned away, leaving a crystallization of my thoughts.

Connection. I’m making things for others to use. I love when I hear, “this is my special cup, no one else gets to use it”. When I sell at markets, I love talking to my customers, and I know now that my pottery has made its way all over the world. You and I are now connected forever (or until you smash your cup on the floor, hehe). It may sound weird, but sometimes I get emotional when I think about this, because I put so much energy into each piece, and now it’s new owner literally has a piece of me too. For me, that’s an honor.

My goal with ceramics and in life is to help others. I love the textures I put on cups because it makes you pause — what is this new sensation? We do so many things unconsciously, like drinking, and when you stop to feel the cup, it gives you a moment to remember what you’re doing. Stop and savor that drink. Take a breath. Look around, really look.
